Das gemeingerm. Adjektiv mhd. enge, ahd. engi, got. aggwus, aengl. enge, norw. ang gehört mit seinem in nhd. ↑ bange erhaltenen Adverb mhd. ange, ahd. ango zu der idg. Wurzel ang̑h- »eng; einengen, zusammendrücken oder -schnüren«. Urverwandt sind zahlreiche Wörter ähnlicher Bedeutung im Lat., Griech., Kelt., Baltoslaw. und Aind., z. B. griech. ágchein »erdrosseln« (↑ Angina), ágchi »nahe bei«, lat. angere »beengen«, angiportus »enges Gässchen«. Aus einer Weiterbildung der Wurzel entstanden dt. ↑ Angst, lat. angustiae »Enge, Klemme« und aind. áṁhas- »Angst, Bedrängnis«. Die Bedeutung der Wortgruppe umfasst also schon früh körperliche wie seelische Einengung, wie es der Gebrauch von dt. »eng« noch heute zeigt. Abl.: Enge (mhd. enge, ahd. engi; räumlich z. B. in Landenge); engen veraltet für »be-, einengen« (mhd., ahd. engen, got. ‹ga›aggwjan), dazu die heute üblichen beengen, einengen, verengen (17. Jh.).
